Dog goes green by helping recycle

A two-year old mongrel with a 'green' nose is doing her bit for the environment by sniffing out recyclable items.

Dizzy from Cornwall has an uncanny ability to detect beer cans, cardboard, envelopes, plastic bottles and rubbish sacks, which she dutifully carries to the family's recycling shed in the garden.

Her eco-awareness even extends to collecting plastic bottles on the beach near her home in Newquay, which she promptly deposits in the nearest bin.

Owner Emma Trebilcock, told the Asian Leader newspaper: "You cannot drink a coke or beer from a can because she wants it.

"When we have barbecues we have got to ask our friends to have their drinks from glasses because she is there waiting for the cans.

"Sometimes we have to check our recycling bins to make sure she has not taken unopened mail out."

Meanwhile, Dizzy would not have been impressed by this week's reports on how bottled water is adding to the problems associated with carbon emissions.

Critics say that transportation required for the bottles is increasing global warming and that people should stick to drinking tap water.
