Do you need insurance for your garden furniture

Home contents insurance may be a useful financial tool for the many people whose gardens have been affected by the recent flooding, one research firm has said.

According to Defaqto, the main risks to garden furniture and plants are flooding, storms and theft.

However, the research specialists state that many contents insurance policies will provide cover as standard against these factors. It is wise to ensure that any small print has been read to ensure that there are no exclusions for contents in the open, though.

Kate Marsden, marketing director of Defaqto Group, said: "Homeowners need to check the small print of their policies extremely carefully and ensure that they really understand what is, and what is not, covered."

She added that some insurers may change their policies in light of the recent flooding so the specifications may be different when householders renew their cover.

Earlier this month, American Express urged homeowners to invest in insurance for their outdoor property.
